Presentation
1 mg (IU) in 1 ml hypokit
Pharmacology
Hormone normally secreted by the pancreas
Actions:
- Causes an increase in BGL concentrations by converting stored liver glycogen to glucose
Metabolism
- Mainly by the liver
- also kidneys and plasma
Indications
Diabetic hypoglycaemia (BGL <4 mmol/L) in pts with altered GCS and unable to self-administer oral glucose
Contras
NIL of significance in the above indication

IM
Side effects
Nausea and vomiting (rare)
Special notes
Not all pts will response to glucagon.
Eg: inadequate glycogen stores in the liver (alcoholics/malnourished)
IM effects
Onset: 5 mins
Peak: n/a
Duration: 25 mins
Hypoglycaemia
BGL < 4 mmol/L and not responding to commands
- unable to insert IV
- 1 IU IM
- single dose only
