Pharmacology
A
Slightly hypertonic crystalloid solution
Composition:
- Sugar - 10% dextrose
- Water
Actions:
- Provide a source of energy
- Supplies body water

Metabolism
A
Dextrose:
- Broken down in most tissues
- Stored in the liver and muscle as glycogen
Water:
- Excreted by the kidneys
- Distributed throughout total body water, mainly in the extracellular fluid compartment

Indications
A
diabetic hypoglycaemia (BGL <4mmol/L) in pts with an altered GCS and unable to self-administer oral glucose

Duration: Depends on severity of hypoglycaemic episode

Hypoglycaemia
A
BGL < 4 mmol/L and not responding to commands
- IV cannula in a large vein
- Confirm IV patency
- 15 g (150 ml) followed by a 10 ml flush
5-10 mins - If GCS or BGL not returned to normal:
- 10 g (100 ml) titrated to effect
- followed by a 10 ml flush
