Pharmacology

A

Slightly hypertonic crystalloid solution

Composition:

  • Sugar - 10% dextrose
  • Water

Actions:

  • Provide a source of energy
  • Supplies body water

Metabolism

A

Dextrose:

  • Broken down in most tissues
  • Stored in the liver and muscle as glycogen

Water:

  • Excreted by the kidneys
  • Distributed throughout total body water, mainly in the extracellular fluid compartment

diabetic hypoglycaemia (BGL <4mmol/L) in pts with an altered GCS and unable to self-administer oral glucose

Hypoglycaemia

A

BGL < 4 mmol/L and not responding to commands

  • IV cannula in a large vein
  • Confirm IV patency
  • 15 g (150 ml) followed by a 10 ml flush

5-10 mins - If GCS or BGL not returned to normal:

  • 10 g (100 ml) titrated to effect
  • followed by a 10 ml flush
