50 mg in 5 ml amp (1%)

Pharmacology
A
Local anaesthetic agent
Actions:
- Prevents initiation and transmission of nerve impulses causing local anaesthesia (1% solution)

Metabolism
A
- By the liver (90%)
- Excreted unchanged by the kidneys (10%)

Indications
A
- Diluent for ceftriaxone for IM administration in suspected meningococcal disease
- Chest wall inflitration as local anaesthetic to facilitate chest decompression in pts with GCS > 10

A
known hypersensitivity

Precautions
A
When using Lignocaine 1% under these indications it is important to rule out inadvertent IV administration due to potential CNS complications

A
- IM (1% solution with ceftriaxone only)
- Local tissue infiltration for chest decompression (MICA only)

Meningococcal Septicaemia
A
- Dilute 1g Ceftriaxone with 3.5ml 1% lignocaine HCL to make 4ml
- Administer IM only
