Miscellaneous Bacteria Flashcards
Borrelia burgdorferi (What does it cause, transmission, symptoms)
Lyme disease, transmitted through tick bite
Causes annular rash, fever, arthritis, cranial nerve palsies
Treponema pallidum (What does it cause and symptoms)
Cause of syphilis (3 stages): Painless ulcer, rash on hands and soles
Leptospira interrogans (What does it cause, transmission, symptoms)
Transmitted to humans following exposure to water contaminated with animal urine
Causes leptospirosis: Biphasic illness with fever, meningitis, hepatitis, renal failure
Rickettsiaceae characteristics (morphology, where they grow, transmission)
Small Gram-negative coccobacilli, strict intracellular pathogens, transmission by insect vectors
Rickettsiaceae 4 genera
Rickettsia, Coxiella, Ehrlichia, Anaplasma
Rickettsia rickettsii (what does it cause, transmission, symptoms)
Rocky Mountain spotted fever, transmitted by tick bites
Fever, rash, myalgias
Coxiella burnetti (what does it cause, transmission, symptoms)
Q fever (fever, pulmonary infiltrates, no rash)
Harbored by sheep, spread by aerosols during birth of lambs or through ingestion of unpasteurized milk
Ehrlichia chaffeensis and Anaplasma phagocytophilun
Transmitted by ticks
Symptoms: Fever, headaches, myalgias, organisms can be seen inside leukocytes as “mulberry”-like clusters (morulae)
What cells do Ehrlichia infect?
Monocytes and macrophages
What cells do Anaplasma infect?
Neutrophils
2 important Bartonella species and what they cause
B. henselae, B. quintana cause bacillary angiomatosis (seen in immunocompromised individuals, vascular skin lesions)
B. henselae (transmission and disease)
Cat-scratch disease (enlargement of lymph nodes following cat scratch or bite)
Chlamydia - 3 important species and what they cause
C. trachomatis - STDs
C. pneumoniae, C. psittaci - pneumonia
Mycoplasma pneumoniae (what do they cause)
Common cause of community-acquired pneumonia
