Misc Questions Flashcards
What is the difference between Mass balancing and Dynamic balancing
Mass balancing - adding weights at the front of the control surface forward of the C of G preventing Flutter
Dynamic Balancing - Part of the control surface deflects into the airflow aiding the pilot in moving the surface
What are the two types of toilet system on an aircraft?
- Overboard System
- Internal tank system
What is the purpose of a Mach Trim system?
Mach Trim system trims the aircraft so as to resist the nose down tendency (aka ‘‘Mach Tuck’’).
This is a result of the center of pressure moving aft along the wing of high speed aircraft.
What is the main structural member of a Wing called?
A Spar
The red dot on the aircraft tire indicates what?
Red dot on an aircraft tire indicates the lightweight point of an adjusted balanced tire.
(This mark should be aligned with the valve stem or the tube balance mark when mounting the tire.)
Define ‘‘Safe Life’’ regarding aircraft structures
Based on metal fatigue
The ‘‘Safe-Life’’ design principle requires that major structural elements be replaced after a fixed number of flight cycles
How many positions has a Kruger flap?
Kruger flap = leading edge flap
2 positions
Extended or retracted
Define the ultimate load regarding aircraft structures
Ultimate load is the normal service load multiplied by a factor of safety which should never actually occur (in theory)
State the purpose of Mass Balancing flight control surfaces
What altitude is there a cabin altitude warning? ]
What component gives that warning?
10’000ft
Cabin altitude warning switch - intermittent sound warning sound
What is the primary function of a balance tab?
Balance tab = Reduces the force needed to move a primary control surface
What is the main function of a balance panel?
What is a semi-monocoque structure?
In this type of structure, bulkheads and formers still provide the shape, and the majority of the flight loads are carried in the skin, but stringers are installed across the formers to reinforce the skin and prevent its deforming under normal operational loads.
State the purpose of hydraulic check valve
To keep the hydraulic fluid from flowing back to the pumps.
How many axes have an autopilot?
3 axis-autopilot
- Elevator channel - pitch control (lateral)
- Aileron channel - roll control (longitudinal)
- Rudder channel - yaw control (vertical/normal)
Note:
Thrust is not included as it is controlled by the Autothrottle and part of the AFS (Auto Flight System)
What is the colour of aero shell fluid 41?
Dyed red
What EASA regulation gives guidelines on aircraft construction?
CS-25 Sub-part D = Design and Construction
(Subpart C = structure)
Does the anti-skid system reduce or increase brake pressure?
What components does the Anti-skid system include?
The Anti-skid system reduces brake pressure if wheel decelerates too much and increases brake pressure if wheel accelerates again.
Anti-skid transducers
Anti-Skid box
Anti-skid valve
(Remember: Anti-Skid system also includes Skid protection and Touch Down Locked Wheel Protection
In the electrical system, what is the function of a static inverter?
Convert DC to AC
uses an Oscillator
State the purpose of a hydraulic motor
Hydraulic motor = PTU (Power Transfer Unit)
Transfers power from one hydraulic linr to another without mixing actual hydraulic fluid
i.e One fluid drives motor for another fluid line
What gas is used in a pneumatic type fire detector?
Helium
Name the two parts of a wing spar (I beam)
Web and Flange
State type of fuel used on gas turbine engines
Jet A1 fuel
