Host country: Advantages
- Bilingualism
- More culture and food mixing
- Migrant workers agree to work for lower wages
- Take menial jobs americans don’t want
Host country: Disadvantages
- Racial conflict
- USA citizens don’t get jobs as easily or have to work for lower wages than before: reduce wages of those who haven’t completed high school edu by 5%
- Not all the money earned is spent in USA, hence economy doesn’t benefit much
- Many of them are unskilled hence they pay lower taxes
- Increase the nation’s poor and uninsured populations
Origin country: Advantages
- Remittance money
- Less pressure on land, social services and jobs
Origin country: Disadvantages
- More men leave so only women and children left behind, population imbalance –> women don’t find men very easily and birth rate drops
- Families are separated
- Younger population leaves and dependent pop remains
- Many rural workers leave. mexico’s food depends on farming so may be food shortages
