  • Han Chinese can only have one kid
  • Ethnic minorities may have two
  • Later in 1980s they allowed those who are single children to have 2 kids
  • In some rural areas also allowed more kids especially if the first was a girl
  • People with handicapped first children

OCP negatives

A
  • 4-2-1 syndrome: one child of the family has to support their parents and grandparents –> strain
  • Little emperor: children are pampered and lack social skills but have high self importance having no siblings
  • Forced abortions etc. may have been traumatic
  • Many kids went unregistered and hence wouldn’t have been able to be educated properly
  • Sex selective abortions - more abortions of females. Otherwise they were killed, abandoned or put in orphanages –> many adopted by families in the USA. Gendercide. Sex ratio skewed and no 33.59 million more men and women.
  • Ageing population and smaller youthful workforce –> by 2050 44% of pop. will be 65 and over.
