Midterm 1 (Part 3) Flashcards
acclimation?
proccess where individal adjusts to change in environment, rapid and reversible
Steps of comparative method
Pattern, hypothesize, prediction, test, inference
example of acclimation?
at high altitudes increased RBC count, hemoglobin, deeper breaths, etc.
How to demonstrate a trait is adaptive?
determine its function and show that function increases fitness in environment
What is the comparative method
seeks to correlate differences among populations or species with variation in selective agent
What is adaptation?
A heritable process that allows individuals to preform a function that enhances survival, the evolutionary process that croduces adaptations
Exaption example?
feathers on birds didnt evolve for flight, were there long before flight
What is a reciprocal transplant?
fitness of individuals is quantified in each of two enviroments, local adaptation shows prediction
What is adaptation not?
no reqirements that trait originally evolved by natural selection
what is an adaptionist fairy tale?
unsupported explanantion for value of phenotype, under assumption that most traits are evolved via natural selection
What are exaptations?
structured that are currently adaptations but evolved in different context, were later made for fitness enhancing function, adaptations that arose after change in function
