Middle School Earth/Space Science Flashcards
Geocentric
having or representing the earth as the center, as in former astronomical systems.
measured from or considered in relation to the center of the earth.
Heliocentric
having or representing the sun as the center, as in the accepted astronomical model of the solar system
measured from or considered in relation to the center of the sun.
Apparent motion
how objects appear to move. For example, due to Earth’s rotation, the sun seems to rise and set each day
Actual motion
how objects actually move. For example, Earth rotates on its axis.
Retrograde motion
orbital or rotational motion of an object in the direction opposite the rotation of its primary
Gravity
A force that tries to pull objects with mass together. The more mass an object has, the stronger it’s gravity. The more distance an object is from another, the weaker the gravity
What is our galaxy?
Milky way
What is a local group?
Local group of galaxies
