Midazolam Class
Amnesic Agent, sedative/hypnotic, anticonvulsant, benzodiazepine, antianxiety
Midazolam MOA
Binds to benzodiazepine receptors
Increases the inhibitory neurotransmitter GABA leading to decreased agitation, relaxation of skeletal muscles, and in high doses- sleep.
Midazolam Indications (7)
Continuous or recurrent tonic-clonic seizures unrelated to eclampsia
Anxiety related to traumatic injury
Amnesic effects prior to synchronized cardioversion
Amnesic effects prior to transcutaneous pacing
Anxiety related to CPAP mask while SBP remains greater than 90 mmHG
Behavioral emergency related to excited delirium
Eclampsia unresponsive to magnesium sulfate
Midazolam Contraindications (2)
Acute narrow-angle glaucoma
Hypotension/shock
Midazolam Adult Seizure Dose
2.5mg IVP OR 5mg IM + 1 repeat
Midazolam Pregnancy Classification
D (harmful to fetus)
Midazolam Adult TCP/Synchronized Cardioversion Dose
2.5mg IVP OR 5mg IM + 1 repeat
Midazolam Adult Excited Delirium Dose
2.5mg IVP or 5mg IM + 1 repeat (IM preferred)
Midazolam Adult Anxiety Related to CPAP Dose
1mg IN or IM
Midazolam Adult Eclampsia Dose
BHO 2.5mg IVP or 5mg IM
Midazolam Adult Anxiety Related to Trauma Dose

Midazolam Peds Seizure Dose
0.05mg/kg max 2.5mg IVP OR 0.1mg/kg max 5mg IM + 1 repeat
