PHARMACOLOGY OF MIDAZOLAM
Short acting CNS depressant
PRESENTATION OF MIDAZOLAM
5 mg in 1 mL glass ampoule
15 mg in 3 mL glass ampoule
ACTIONS OF MIDAZOLAM
Anxiolytic
Sedative
Anti-convulsant
PRIMARY EMERGENCY INDICATIONS FOR MIDAZOLAM
List all 7
- Continuous tonic-clonic seizures
- Sedation to maintain intubation
- Sedation to enable intubation
- Rapid Sequence Intubation (RSI)
- Sedation to enable cardioversion
- Sedation in the agitated Pt
- Sedation in psychostimulant OD
CONTRAINDICATIONS FOR MIDAZOLAM
Known hypersensitivity to benzodiazepines
PRECAUTIONS OF MIDAZOLAM
List all 4
- Reduced doses may be required for the elderly, Pts with chronic renal failure, CCF or shock
- The CNS depressant effects of benzodiazepines are enhanced in the presence of narcotics and other tranquillisers including alcohol
- Can cause severe respiratory depression in Pts with COPD
- Pts with myasthenia gravis (autoimmune neuromuscular disease)

Depressed level of conscioussness
Respiratory depression
Loss of airway control
Hypotension
ONSET & DURATION OF MIDAZOLAM
IM
Onset: 3 - 5 min
Peak: 15 min
Duration: 30 min
IV
Onset: 1 - 3 min
Peak: 15 min
Duration: 20 min
ADULT DOSAGE FOR MIDAZOLAM
TONIC-CLONIC SEIZURES:
60 yo 0.05 mg/kg IM (Max single dose 5mg)
Repeat @10/60 original dose of Midazolam once only if required
PAEDIATRIC DOSE OF MIDAZOLAM
IM 0.1 mg/kg (Max single dose 10mg)
Repeat @ 10/60 once only if required
