PHARMACOLOGY OF CEFTRIAXONE
Cephalosporin antibiotic
PRESENTATION OF CEFTRIAXONE
1g sterile powder in a glass vial
PRIMARY EMERGENCY INDICATIONS FOR CEFTRIAXONE
- Suspected meningococcal septicaemia
- Severe sepsis ( consult only )
CONTRAINDICATIONS OF CEFTRIAXONE
Allergy to Cephalosporin antibiotics
PRECAUTIONS FOR CEFTRIAXONE
Allergy to Penicillin antibiotics
ROUTE OF ADMINISTRATION OF CEFTRIAXONE
IV (preferred)
IM (if IV access unavailable)
- special notes
- dose dose not exceed 1g
- IV dose made with 10mL sterile water, administered over 2 min
- IM dose made up to 4mL using 1% Lignocaine administered in Lateral upper thigh.
SIDE EFFECTS OF CEFTRIAXONE
Nausea
Vomiting
Skin rash
ONSET & DURATION OF CEFTRIAXONE

- Note:
- adult 1g dose
- child 50 mg/kg (max 1g)
- IV g + water = 10 mL
- IM g + Lignocaine 1% = 4 mL
ADULT DOSAGE OF CEFTRIAXONE
IV
1g + 9.5mL sterile water = 10mL mixture administer slowly over 2min
IM
1g + 3.5mL Lignocaine 1% = 4mL mixture administer Upper lateral thigh or other large muscle mass
PAEDIATRIC DOSAGE
IM 50mg/kg + 3.5 mL Lignocaine 1% = 4mL mixture. Administer to upper lateral thigh
*Note: 1g powder max dose regardless of calculation
