Microbiology Lesson 8 Flashcards
is the science of naming, describing, and classifying living things. Is the type of system that biologists use in order to classify all the organisms on the Earth.
Classifying Living Things
Taxonomy
8 Major Taxonomic Ranks/Hierarchy of Biological Classification
Domain, Kingdom, Phylum, Class, Order, Family, Genus, Species.
represent major groups of organisms with fundamental differences in cellular structure and biochemistry.
Domain
group organisms based on shared characteristics and evolutionary relationships.
Kingdom
Phyla represent major evolutionary branches within a kingdom and are characterized by distinct structural and developmental features.
Phylum
Phyla are subdivided into classes, which group together organisms with similar characteristics, anatomy, and embryonic development.
Class
consist of related families of organisms that share common features and evolutionary relationships.
Order
group together genera (plural of genus) that share more specific similarities.
Family
share common characteristics and are more closely related to each other than to organisms outside the genus.
Genus
is the most specific and basic unit of classification. And is often defined as organisms that share common characteristics and are reproductively isolated from other groups.
Species
provides meaningful groupings of organisms based on evolutionary relationships.
Biological Classification
What are the 3 Domains System?
Eubacteria, Archaea, Eukaryota
are true bacteria and
prokaryotes
Eubacteria
were thought to be same as bacteria until recently. Are also Prokaryotes
Archaea
Four Kingdoms
Protista - ex. algae
Fungi - ex. mushroom
Plantae - ex. Maple tree
Animalia - ex. Humans
