Microbiology Flashcards
what is a spore?
inert structures, resistant to physical and chemical challenge e.g. exotoxins from Clostridiodes difficile
what is a toxin?
promotes infection and disease by directly damaging the host tissues and disabling the immune system
what does aerobic mean?
what does obligate aerobe mean?
grow in oxygen
require oxygen
what does facultative anaerobe mean?
obligate anaerobe?
tolerate oxygen
killed by oxygen
what is differential media?
incorporation of other chemicals produces visible changes in colonies that facilitate identification
what is MALDI-TOF?
produced a characteristic signature based on the generation of ions fro a sample
what are features of the gram positive cell wall?
secondary polymer
multi-layered peptidoglycan
cytoplasmic membrane
stains purple
(exotoxin)
what are features of the gram negative cell wall?
outer membrane
LPS (lipopolysaccharide)
peptidoglycan
cytoplasmic membrane
endotoxin
what is virulence?
the capacity of a microbe to cause damage to its host
is coagulase test for step or staph?
to differentiate between staph (+ test) aureus and coagulase negative staph. (including staph epidermis)
what are coliforms?
species of gram negative bacteria that look like Escherichia coli (E.Coli) when cultures in blood agar
what are clostridides?
gram POSITIVE ANAEROBIC BACILLI
part of normal bowel flora
produce spores
produce exotoxins-> severe tissue damage
