Embryology Flashcards
what is the morula?
16+ blastomere cells
what is a blastocyst?
200-300 cells
what makes up the blastocyst?
Trophoblast
Embryoblast
What is the trophoblast responsible for?
embryonic part of placenta
contacts with the endometrium of the uterus to facilitate implantation
& formation of placenta
what is the embryoblast responsible for?
formation of embryo itself
what does sperm entry into the oocyte trigger?
completion of meiosis II
release of cortical granules by oocyte
what is compaction?
rapid mitotic division without increase in size
(confined in ZP)
where does the embryo usually implant?
endometrial lining on posterior or anterior uterine wall
name the layers the trophoblast divides into
cytotrophoblast
syncytiotrophoblast
what stimulates corpus luteum? what produces it?
Human gonadotrophin (hCG)
syncytioblast
what 2 layers does embryo organise into?
epiblast (dorsal)
hypoblast (ventral)
which 2 cavities form? what do they form from?
amniotic cavity- epiblast
primitive yolk sac- hypoblast
where is the primitive streak?
appears in midline at caudal end of epiblast
