Micro - Hantavirus (HPS) Flashcards
Hantavirus is (RNA+, RNA-, DNA) virus
RNA -
Virulence factor of hantavirus
Trisegmented genome
What is coded for by the three segments of hantavirus genome?
- Nucelocaspid protein
- RNA polymerase
- G1/G2 envelope proteins
How is hantavirus transmitted?
Aerosolized rodent feces, urine, saliva; eating food contaminated with rodent feces, urine, saliva; touching contaminated thing then touching mouth
Is hantavirus transmitted human-to-human?
NO!
How can HPS be prevented?
Avoid rodents and take precautions cleaning areas where rodents are/have been
Spectrum of HPS
Flu-like sx progress to severe pneumonia
Pathogenesis of hantavirus
Viral load in alveoli recruit macrophages and lymphoblasts –> secrete cytokines –> activate endothelium –> increased pulmonary capillary permeability –> severe pulmonary edema
Viral load onset vs. progression of HPS
Very high viral load at onset of pulmonary edema that is then rapidly cleared but damage persists
Incubation time for hantavirus
1-5 weeks
Two stages of HPS
- Rapid onset pulmonary edema
2. Respiratory failure and cardiogenic shock
Sx during first stage of HPS
Flu-like sx + vomiting + diarrhea + abd pain
Sx during second stage of HPS
SOB + hypotension + productive cough + fluid accumulation in lungs + reduced heart efficiency
Mortality rate of HPS
30%
Most common strain of hantavirus in US
Sin Nombre carried by deer mouse
