What is leadership?
The ability of an individual, group, or organization to influence other individuals, teams, or entire organizations.
Important leadership characteristics (top 4)
Trust, integrity, ethics, vision
Why is trust so important?
Good relationships are built on mutual trust
Employees who don’t trust their managers are less likely to be motivated to do a good job and help their manager
Leaders vs. Managers
Leadership is not about telling others what to do; leaders share the leadership roles and inspire, motivate, and guide others to succeed
Management is commonly a hierarchical top-down reporting relationship structure
Trait Theories
Attempts to determine a list of distinctive characteristics that account for leadership effectiveness
Behavioral Theories
Attempt to determine distinctive styles used by effective workers
Situational Theories
Attempt to determine the appropriate leadership styles for particular situations using models
Leader-Member Exchange
Develops a positive relationship with each individual
In-group: clique, favorites, liked; out-group: ousted and disliked
Transformational Leadership
Bring about continuous learning, innovation, and change
Transactional Leadership
Make social exchanges to get the job done
Visionary Leadership
Create an image of the organization in the future that provides direction for setting goals and developing strategic plans
Charismatic Leadership
Inspire loyalty, enthusiasm, and high levels of performance
Servant Leadership
Help others by placing their needs ahead of self
Authentic Leadership
Develop open, honest, trusting relationships
Abusive Leadership
Abusive leader behavior triggers abusive peer behaviors, emotional exhaustion, and job insecurity
