methods of cell transport Flashcards
what is active transport and name the different methods
particles that move from an area of low concentration to high concentration (does use energy). Different methods are phagocytosis, endocytosis and exocytosis
what is passive transport and name the different methods
particles that move from an area of high concentration to low concentration. Methods are simple diffusion, osmosis and facilitated diffusion
what is diffusion
The movement of substances across the membrane from high concentration to low. This does not need energy
what is facilitated diffusion
Movement of large or charged molecules across the membrane from high concentration to low (with the concentration gradient) with the help of a carrier protein. This does not use energy
what is osmosis
The movement of water across a semipermeable membrane from an area of high to low concentration. Does not use energy
what is simple diffusion
Movement of molecules across the membrane from an area of high to low concentration. Does not use energy (ATP)
what is ATP
Molecule that is used when energy is required
It comes from respiration
It is used in active transport to provide energy molecules to be moved against the concentration gradient
ATP releases energy when broken down to ADP + P
