Methodological Issues Chaney Flashcards
Data
Quantitative
Answers were yes or no questions
Doesn’t tell us the reasons why there was a difference in attitude and behaviour
Ethics
Not told aim but all guidelines were met.
Internal
How sure are we that the research was actually measuring how the devices influence behaviour
Self report - social desirability bias - pretended they used the funhaler when they didn’t to seem like better parents
EV’s weren’t controlled for as was a field experiment (how strict parents were, how tired parent was, how busy they were) this means we don’t know what else influenced the use but ecological validity was high
Ecological validity
Natural behaviour as in their homes
Not everyday that parents fill in questionnaire
Reliability
Many aspects were standardised, questionnaire, length of time using funhaler, funhaler was same for every child. So could be repeated.
Only on 32 children so not large enough to establish a consistent effect
Sample
Can’t be generalised as just on young children - appropriate for target population as toys were for young children
Ethnocentrism
All from Australia, so ethnocentric as the toys wouldn’t appeal to children from all cultures
Research method
Field experiment
Repeated measures - ppt variables controlled, forgetting inhaler but DC’s occurred working out aim
