Grant Et Al Flashcards
Aim
To show a context dependent memory effect
To investigate context dependent memory effect on recall and recognition
What was the IV?
Study conditions and test conditions
Whether he ppt read the article under silent or noisy conditions
Whether the ppt was tested under matching or mismatching conditions
What design was used?
Independent measures
What was their task?
To read a 2 page article and then answer a recall and recognition test
How many participants were there?
8 psychology students from a psychology class acted as experimenters and each person recruited 5 acquaintances as participants - data was recorded from 39 ppts as one was removed
What were the 4 test conditions?
Silent study silent test conditions
Silent study noisy test conditions
Noisy study silent test conditions
Noisy study noisy test conditions
What was the recording off that the ppts heard?
Noise at lunchtime in a uni cafe played at moderate level
What was the recognition test?
16 multiple choice questions with 4 answers
What was the recall test?
10 short answer questions
What test was taken first?
The recall to ensure that what they remembered was from the text and not the multiple choice test
What sampling method was used?
Volunteering - classroom project
How long did the procedure last?
30 mins approx
Who wore headphones?
Every participant
What did ppts do after they read the article?
Had a 2 minute break where they rested
What happened after the study?
Ppts were debriefed as to the true purpose
What did they find out by recording reading times in both conditions?
No difference
Results for recall test
In both matching conditions, students results snowed a context dependency advantage
Recall test Silent silent - 6.7 Silent noisy - 5.4 Noisy silent - 4.6 Noisy noisy - 6.2
Conclusions
There is a context dependency effect for Newley learned material with people doing better in matching conditions. Students are likely to do better in exams if they study with no noise as it will be silent in their exams
What is context dependent memory?
When the memory of info you need to learn is better when tested in the same context as you learned it than tested in a different context or environment
What experiment was used?
Laboratory experiment
What was the DV?
Participants performance on a short answer recall test and a multiple choice recognition test
Results for recognition test
Silent silent - 14.3
Silent noisy - 12.7
Noisy silent - 12.7
Noisy noisy - 14.3
