Grant Et At Methodlogical Issues Flashcards
Data collected
Quantitative - easy to summarise and compare between conditions
The test scores were out of 10 and 16 - the context dependent effect was easy to see in the matching conditions
Informed consent
Gained as they were told what task they had to do
Deception
They were deceived until after the study when they were debriefed
Right to withdraw
They were told it was voluntary
Internal validity
High as highly controlled lab experiment with controls, procedure was standardised. There were controls to ensure there were no EV’s (order in which they took the test) however participant variables could have affected the results
Ecological validity
reading a article and answering questions on it is an ecologically valid task. However the task was conducted as part of a study not part of the lesson and ppts had to wear headphones to listen to artificial background noise which lowers validity. Also, revision is learnt more than a few mins ago so it doesn’t represent exam conditions
Population validity
Low as sample was biased using an opportunity sample which means findings can’t be generalised
Can it be repeated?
Yes as highly controlled lab experiment which means it can be repeated to find out reliability
What sampling method was used?
Opportunity sample as the 5 ppl recruited people to take part - convenient for researcher as cost and time effective. However, sample might be biased
Research method - experiment and design used
Laboratory experiment - controlled and easily replicated
Independent measures design - May be participant variables including interest in the study, ability to focus, but there weren’t any order effects
