What is the Oedipus complex?
A desire for sexual involvement with the parent of the opposite sex and a sense of anger with the parent of the same sex
When are the sequence of the stages evident from?
Maturation (nature) and how the child is treated by others (nurture)
Background to the study
Hans was a cheerful child till he developed his phobia when there was a difference between what he said and what he thought. Freud thought this was due to what was going on in his unconscious mind.
Who was Hans referred to?
Freud by his father
What did Freud do?
Interpreted his behaviour and told him why he was thinking the way he was (psychoanalysis)

How was data gathered?
Through his father who observed and questioned Hans. He sent records of the convos to Freud who gave his father advice on how to proceed

He started to show interest in his little widdler
What did his mum threat him about?
Sending DR A to cut his widdler off
What happened when Hans was 3.5 years old?
He had a little sister who he resented and he wanted his mum to drop her in the bath so she would drown him
What happened a year after his sister was born?
Hans developed a fear of being bitten by horses
Why was he scared of being bitten by horses?
He overheard his father say to a child ‘don’t put your finger to the white horse or it will bite you’ and he saw a horse fall down and kick about with its legs while it was pulling a carriage
What did his fear generalise to?
Buses and carts
