Q

Background to the study

A

Hans was a cheerful child till he developed his phobia when there was a difference between what he said and what he thought. Freud thought this was due to what was going on in his unconscious mind.

Q

What were his fantasises?

A

The giraffe fantasy
2 plumber fantasies
The parenting fantasies

Hans was worried his mother would go away and prone to the day dreams and fantasises

17
Q

Key findings

A

Little Hans fear of horses was a subconscious fear of his father. The dark around the mouth and the blinkers resembled his dad’s moustache and glasses. He was scared as he was going through the OP.
His fascination of his widdler was because he was going through the OP.
Hans dream about the giraffe was him trying to take his mother away from his father so he could have her to himself.
Hans fantasy of wanting to be a father linked to the OC.
Hans fantasy of the father was him passing through the OP.

18
Q

Conclusions

A

Freuds study provided support for:
His theory of psychosexual development
His suggestion that boys experience the OC in the phallic stage
His concept of unconscious determinism which shows people are unaware of their behaviour
His theory of psychoanalysis to treat the unconscious by bringing it into the conscious so it can be resolved

19
Q

Theories on which the study is based

A

Stages of psychosexual development

20
Q

Where was Freud from

A

Austria

21
Q

Giraffe fantasy

A

In the night there was a big giraffe and a crumpled one. The big one called out because I took the crumpled one away from it. Then it stopped calling out, then I sat on top of the crumpled one.

Big giraffe - resembled dad or his large penis
Crumpled - wife or genital organ

22
Q

Plumber fantasy 1

A

I was in the bath and then the plumber came and unscrewed it. Then he took a big borer and stuck it into my stomach.

This was being scared of his mum letting him go and him drowning

23
Q

Parenting fantasy

A

Hans was the children’s daddy, his mummy was their mummy and his father was the grandad

This meant the Oedipus complex had made a happier solution, instead of putting his father out the way he made him grandfather

24
Q

Plumber fantasy 2

A

The plumber came and he took away my behind with a pair of pincers, and then gave me another, and then did the same with my widdler.

Bigger penis as he wants to be like his father
Overcoming his fear of castration - accepting doctor would take away his penis but the outcome was a happy one as it made it bigger
