Chaney Et Al 2004 Flashcards
What was the aim of the study?
To show that the funhaler which has toys in it can provide positive reinforcement which leads to improved obedience in young asthmatics
What was the research method?
Field experiment as was conducted in their homes
What design was used?
Repeated measures design
Theories on which the study is based
Operant conditioning - learning through consequences
What’s a good thing about repeated measures design?
Participant variables were controlled. For example, if a parent forgot to use the inhaler, it would be like this in both conditions.
What’s a bad thing about repeated measures design?
Demand characteristics - parents may have worked out what the research was about, they may have worked out that the funhaler was meant to make things better and so they gave answers that indicated it did
What was the IV?
Whether the child used a standard small volume spacer device
Whether the child used a funhaler
What was the DV?
Amount of adherence to the prescribed medical regime
Sample
32 children (3.2 years old) who were prescribed drugs by the spacer were recruited
Did Chaney get informed consent?
The parents provided consent and participated through completing questionnaires and phone interviews.
What happened before the research?
Ppts were approached at home and interviewed with a questionnaire about their current inhaler
How long were they given the funhaler for?
2 weeks and reported over the phone whether they had used it the previous day
What happened after they had been using them both?
The researcher visited them again and parents were interviewed and given the matched questionnaire
What did the data from the self report show?
How easy each device was to use
Obedience of parents and children
Treatment attitudes
What was the funhaler?
Had some features to distract the child from the drug delivery. Had toys (spinner and whistle) which only worked when the child exhaled. The funhaler was tested to make sure it delivered the right amount that was needed.
