Metamorphosis Flashcards
What does meta mean?
change
What does morph mean?
form or structure
What does metamorphosis mean?
change in form or structure
What does ametabolous mean? (2)
no or “little” metamorphosis
egg > nymph > adult
How do the immature and mature ametabolous differ?
Young look exactly like adults, but without reproductive organs
What is a nymph?
young of an insect that undergoes incomplete metamorphosis
What are instars?
stage of insects between molts
What are adult ametabolous insects?
similar to nymph but hasn’t gone through a pupal stage
What does hemimetabolous mean? (2)
incomplete metamorphosis
Egg > wingless nymph > Nymph > adult
When did winged insects developed hemimetabolism?
during Carboniferous and Permian Period
What is holometabolism? (2)
complete metamorphosis
Egg > larva > pupa > adult
Where are holometabolous eggs laid?
laid in trees, leaves, carcasses, or water
How are insect eggs ensured to survive?
Can serve as time capsules, not hatching until the environment is optimal
What is larvae, and some examples?
immature, wingless feeding stage
Ex- grubs, maggots, and caterpillars
What is pupa for holometabolous insects?
nonfeeding, immobile stage
