Metaldehyde Flashcards
What is metaldehyde used for? how much must be consumed?
mulluscicide
control snails and slugs
alot, can become addicting to dogs and they will acquire a taste
what is the absorption and metabolism?
well absorbed in GIT
metabolized rapidly to acetaldehyde
What is the distribution and excretion?
readily crosses the BBB
acetaldehyde metabolite excreted in urine
What clinical signs are acetaldehyde responsible for? (few)
vomiting and fewer tremors
what is the MOA?
reduces GABA and serotonin levels in brain = CNS excitation, occasionally depression
depression of medullary resp centre = death
gasatroenteritis (chemical irritation)
brain damage
mild liver damage
What are the clinical manifestations/two syndromes seen? (DOG)
excitatory
depressive
What is seen with depressive syndrome?
emesis (irritation) depression incoordination increase resp and HR cyanosis coma
what is seen with the excitatory syndrome?
salivation tremors ataxia continuous convulsions (variable) - no external stim) opisthotonus nystagmus elevated body temp
What are the PM findings?
non-specific
congestion and mild hemorrhage in liver, kidney and GIT
degen histo
large stomach contents (apple cider smell)
what is the Dx?
sudden onset of neuro signs or death
apple cider stomach contents
analysis of stomach
what is the treatment?
symptomatic - sedation (rompun, valium) anesthesia emetics fluids AC
What is the prognosis?
with prompt treatment prog is good
rapidly eliminated and usually over within 24h
