- Headache
- Hyperkalemia
- Muscle twitching (tingling of fingers and toes)
- Warm flushed skin
- Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea
- Changes in LOC
- Kussmaul respirations (compensatory actions)

Risk factors and causes for metabolic acidosis
A
- DKA
- Renal Failure
- Diarrhea, vomiting
- Shock
- Severe sepsis
- Liver failure
- Young women who abuse laxatives or extreme diet restriction
- Salicylate intoxication

Interventions
A
- Monitor I and O, VS, RR, LOC
- Admin. IV fluids carefully
- Position to open up chest
- Oral care for dry mouth and vomiting
- Administer sodium bicarbonate

- Monitor LOC and neuromuscular activity
- Monitor nausea and vomiting
- Assess RR and vomiting
- Position to ease respirations and prevent aspirations
