What are the most common symptoms of ulcerative colitis?
bloody diarrhea and abdominal pain
How often should you assess the pain of someone who has ulcerative colitis?
every 2 hours and then administer medication
If someone has an acute exacerbation of Ulcerative Colitis what is the first action a nurse should take?
Review the patient’s electrolyte values
What are the treatment options for someone who has ulcerative colitis?
steroids and pain meds that do not increase bleeding (NSAIDS=no)
If a patient with ulcerative colitis is at risk for dehydration what should they do?
Drink at least 1 L of fluid/day
What is the role of serous exudate?
The expulsion of dead white blood cells and the waste from the phagocytosis
What is the purpose of a fever?
A low-grade fever helps with defending and repairing the bodies by killing off the bad microorganisms
What does the acronym RICE stand for?
Rest
Ice
Compression
Elevate
What treatments are used for inflammation?
- reduce edema through elevation, antipyretics, and anti-inflammatory meds
- Antibiotics, surgery, and steroids
- prevent further injury, meds as prescribed, maintaining the intake of liquids and nutrients
- Add vitamin C because it helps the body heal better
Medications used to treat inflammation
- corticosteroids
- Antibiotics
- NSAIDs
- Analgesics
What are some adverse effects of corticosteroids that nurses should be aware of?
- can make patient immunocompromised
- Blood sugar goes up
- Osteoporosis
- glaucoma
If a patient wants to stop taking a corticosteroid, what should happen to the medication dosage?
They should taper off. A patient should never stop taking it abruptly.
What are the signs of systemic reactions to an infection?
temp of the area goes up, HR goes up, RR goes up.
What happens when a pt is septic?
BP goes down because of vasodilation after being constricted for too long
What does purulent drainage look like?
Yellow pustular drainage and it smells bad.
What does serosanguinous drainage look like?
Pinkish red like Sangria
What are the 3 stages of inflammation?
- vascular and cellular responses
- Exudate production
- reparative phase
