Meta analysis Flashcards
What is meta analysis
It is a technique used in a number of research studies where the results of several studies are combined but have addressed similar aims or hypotheses
How Consistently are the Ivs measured in meta-analysis
They are measured in different ways usually so the researcher uses effect size as the DV in order to assess overall trends
How can a weight loss program demonstrate the size of the effect
When a weight loss program boasts that it leads to an average weight loss of say 30 pounds then this is the size of the effect
If research considers a number of studies but no effect size is calculated if this meta-analysis
No it is simply a review
What is a strength of meta-analysis
Analysing the results from a group of studies rather than from just one can allow more reliable valid conclusions
How does meta analysis allows to reach an overall conclusion
Often studies produce contradictory results and add meta analysis provides a statistical way to represent the findings of different studies
Why are meta analysis studies more valid through being based on a wide sample of participants?
Because the conclusions might be based on a wide sample covering different age groups cultures and occupations
What other weaknesses of meta-analysis
The research designs in the different studies sampled may vary considerably so it could mean that the studies are not truly comparable and therefore it may be not appropriate to put them all together. Sometimes the conclusions are therefore not a valid
