Mental Preperation Flashcards
What does goal setting allow the performer to do?
To optimize performance by improving confidence and motivation
What are the 4 ways in which goal setting influences performance? (Lock + Lathern 1990)
1 - Directs attention onto the task
2 - Increases the effort given
3 - Increases persistance
4 - Increases motivation
What is the SMARTER principle?
Specific Measurable Accepted / agreed Realistic Time Exciting Recorded
Explain the 3 activity-based goals
Performance - based on previous performances (eg beating PB)
Process - improving technique
Product (outcome) - the end result (eg, winning)
State what the three types of time-based goals are
Short term
Medium term
Long term
Define Self-efficacy
A type of self-confidence specific to sport, refering to the persons perception of their standard of ability in specific situations
If a performer has high self efficacy, what type of perfomrer could he potentially be? (according to bandura)
NACH
Adopt approuch behaviour
Seek challenges
Percivere
Explain the Self-efficacy theory
Performance accomplishments - performer should be reminded of previous successes in the difficult skill
Vicarious experiences - performer should watch someone of equal ability complete the skill successfully
Verbal persuasion - convince the perfomrer they can perfomrer the skill well
Control of arousal - performer evalues their internal feelings and physiological state
These all lead to an efficacy expectation, which leads to athletic expectation
