What is the role of leader?
To give player satisfaction, and try to achieve success
Name 5 qualities of a leader
Motivated Ambitious Experienced Understanding (empathy) Decisive Good at communicating Responsible Trustworthy
Describe an Autocratic (task orientated) leader
What are they best for?
Makes all the decisions, motivtated to complete all tasks effiencently, no delegation of responsibilities
Best for interactive sports which require quick decisions, have large groups. Especially dangerous sports such as rock climbing
Describe a Democratic leader
Share decisions, delegate responsibilites, develops interpersonal relations within the group
Describe a laissez-faire leader
Stands aside and lets the group make decisions
Leads to performers becoming aggressive and give up easily when mistakes occur
What is the difference between an Emergant and a Prescribed leader?
Emergant = Already inside the group when selected Prescribed = Selected from outside of the group
Describe the trait theory of leadership, and why it is unlikely to be true?
Also describe a side theory of trait
Leaders are born with the ability to take charge
Genetically inherited, stable, enduring, predictable
Should be able to take charge in any situation
Unlikely to occur as a rugby captain could not be a football one (self confidence is low)

Describe the social learning theory of leadership, and why it is unlikely to be true?
Watch - imitate - copying
Learn from the environment
Reinforcement by a significant other
Does not take into account genetic factors, and so unlikely that the environment alone will create effective leaders

The degree of success
The extent of group satisfaction when achieveing the goal

Situational characteristics - Environmental conditions (type of activity, numbers involved, time avalible)
Leadership charactersitics - the skill + experience, personality (task oreintated)
Member charactersitcs - experience, gender, ability
Identify and explain the 3 things that determine the type of leader needed (multi-dimensional model of leadership)
Required behaviour - What is ought to happen (eg, strict and clear for climbing)
Actual behaviour - What the leader chooses to do (eg, be autocratic)
Preferred behaviour - What the members want from the leader (eg, autocratic to keep them safe)
What occurs if the 3 leadership styles of the multi-dimensional model of leadership are all congruent?
