Define attitude
A behavioural response to an attitude object, it is learnt
What is prejudice?
An attitude, but it is a pre-judgment which can be unfairly biased
What are attitudes formed from?
Friends Family Peers Teachers Coaches Past experiences
Describe The Triadic Model
Cognitive : Knowledge and beliefs
Affective : Feelings and emotions
Behavioural : Intended behaviour
What are the two ways of changing an attitude?
Persuasive Communication
Cognitive Dissonance
What is consonance?
When all 3 aspects of the triadic model are in harmony
Describe cognitive dissonance in terms of changing an attitude
Dissoncance is an emotional conflict, occurs when 1 component of the triadic model is in conflict with the others
So consonance needs to be achieved to change the attitude
Describe Persuasive Communication in terms of changing an attitude
Perusader - Message - Situation - Recipients
Persuader : Needs to be a significant other (Coach)
Message : Presented in a way that makes the recipient want to change (swimming allows windsurfing)
Situation : Much easier if other perusaders are present
Recipient : Much easier if the recipient is willing to change their attitude (understands the benefits)
