Attentional Control Flashcards
At what point in Easterbrooks’ Cue utilization theory is said to be called Cue utilization?
The point at which selective attention is at its best
Decision making it at its optimum
The perceptual field is at its ideal width
Explain Easterbrook’ theory of Cue utilization, starting from ‘sleepy’ and ending with ‘frenetic’ (Inverted U)
'Sleepy' : Low arousal Perceptual field is wide Selective attention not functioning (miss cues) Decision making is negativly affected
'Frenetic' : High arousal Perceptual field is narrow Relevant detail is missed -selective attention not functioning Decision making is negativly affected
What are the two dimentions of attentional style as said by Nideffer?
Width (broad / narrow)
Direction (internal / external)
Explain the broad and narrow aspect of width (Nideffer)
Broad - required for all open skills
Takes into account many environmental cues as well as perfferal cues
Narrow - concentrating on one / a couple of stimuli
Explain the external / internal aspect of direction (Nideffer)
External - things that are going on around us in the environment
Internal - Focusing inwardly to the psychological state
Thoughts, emotions, and thinking processes for decision making
What are the benefits of correct attentional style?
Aids concentration
Helps control anxiety
Prevents negative thoughts
Allows switching between attentional styles
