Bipolar Disorder 1
Most severe type; Involves high-highs (mania) and low-lows (depression)
Bipolar Disorder 2
Not as severe; Hypomania and depression; at least 1 hypomanic episode
Cyclothymic Disorder
Alternate with symptoms of mild to moderate depression over at least 2 years; could include rapid cycling
Rapid cycling
More than 4 episodes of mania within a year
Men with bipolar disorder are more likely:
to have legal problems or commit acts of violence
Women with bipolar disorder are more likely:
misuse alcohol, commit suicide, or get thyroid disease
Risk factors in Bipolar disorder:
Genetics- Bipolar 1 genetically similar to schizophrenia; Bipolar 2 related to Major Depressive Disorder;
Lithium
Used to treat Bipolar; blood should be drawn every few days after first being prescribed and then after every dosage change; monitor for toxicity; can cause kidney and thyroid issues
ECT ( electroconvulsive therapy)
has been shown to work within a week in treating depressive episodes

When is Oppositional Defiant disorder most typically dx?
Around age 8, more common in boys
