Mycobacteria
Group B strep = S. agalactiae
leading cause of sepsis, meningitis, and pneumonia in newborns
G+ cocci
extracellular; short chains or pairs
beta hemolytic; a few are non-hemolytic
sialic acid polysaccharide capsule –> prev C3 deposition
Group B strep patho
type III most common serotype (I and II also cause dz)
starts off as pneumonia and can progress to meningitis
hippurate positive–> deep purple color
post CAMP test
catalase -
Tx with PCN
N. meningitidis
G- diplococci cat and ox + maltose and glc fermenter Epid: human only host spread via airborne droplets inc dz seen in pt with term C' def maternal Ab protects until 6mo Complication: Waterhouse-Frid --> destruction of adrenal glands
N. meningitidis virulence
polysaccharide capsule --> antiphago endotoxin/LPS IgA protease Pili Adhesins Invasins Xsferrin and lactoferrin binding proteins
