G+ cocci
extracellular; short chains or pairs
beta hemolytic; a few are non-hemolytic
sialic acid polysaccharide capsule –> prev C3 deposition

starts off as pneumonia and can progress to meningitis
hippurate positive–> deep purple color
post CAMP test

spread via airborne droplets
inc dz seen in pt with term C' def
maternal Ab protects until 6mo
Complication: Waterhouse-Frid --> destruction of adrenal glands
