Prostate Gland
Lies in front of the anterior wall of the rectum and 2cm behind the symphysis pubis
surrounds the bladder neck and the urethra
prostates secretes a thin, milky alkaline fluid that helps sperm viability
it is round or heart shaped
Pain in penis, scrotum, tests or groin
pain in these areas may indicate a hernia or inflammatory process
Lesions in genital area
may be a sign of a STI
Discharge from penis
sign of an infection
Lumps, swelling or masses in your scrotum, genital or groin area. Feelings of heaviness or dragging in the scrotum?
may be a sign of infection, hernia or cancer
scrotum enlarges with aging
younger male it may indicate hydrocele, Hematocele, hernia or cancer
testicular tumor may cause a feeling of heaviness
Difficulty with urination
may indicate an infection or blockage including prostatic enlargement
increased frequency of urination
related to abnormalities of the prostate, medications or infection
Decreased frequency
could be prostate enlargement or kidney problems
Changes in the color or odor of urine
hematuria (blood) may be an infection, kidney stones, BPH or cancer
Pain in urination
pain is seen with UTI, prostatitis or STI
Any incontinence or dribbling of urine
incontinence may occur after a prostatectomy
dribbling may be overflow incontinence
enlarged prostate or tumor
diabetes or neurologic diseases
radiation treatments
Change in libido
(desire) should be investigated to determine cause
Erectile dysfunction
can be attributed to various factors i.e alcohol use, diabetes, depression, and antihypertensive medications
Fertility in couples
men account for 20% of sole responsibility in infertility in couples (up to 40% contributory)
Colorectal cancer
cancer risk is increased with a family history
Exercise and colorectal cancer
The link between diet, weight and exercise and colorectal cancer are some of the strongest of any type of cancer
Testicular Cancer
cyrptochidism(undescended testicles)
age 20-40
family history of cancer
mump orchitis
inguinal hernia
mump orchitis
orchitis is an inflammation of the testicles
kind of testicular inflammation is often associated with the mumps virus
Prostate Cancer Risk Factors
Rare under 40 rapid increased risk after 50 years of age
highest in African American or carribean males
if your brother or father has it the likelihood is high
being a drunk
exposure to agent orange
certain gene mutations BRCA2
people who work in farming, tire manufacturing, with paint or firefighters to toxic chemicals
Testicular Cancer
most testicular tumors occur between the ages of 18 to 35
practically all are malignant
Common in white males and rare in African, Mexican, and Asians
biopsy will confirm diagnosis
early detection is important
not a lot of men practice self examination
Symptoms of testicular cancer (genitals)
Jim has a painless lump or swelling on one of his testicles. He’s going through pain, discomfort or numbness and it doesnt have to necessary swell.
His testicles feel very heavy and there is a dull ache in the lower abdomen of his groin. His scrotum feels like there is a sudden build up in his scrotom.
Symptoms of testicular cancer (everywhere else)
Jim has lower back pain, shortness of breath, chest pains and bloody sputum because he’s in the later stages of testicular cancer.
he has blood clots from the swelling of his legs or shortness of breath. The doctor said for young to middle aged men developing a blood clot can be the first sign of testicular cancer
Prevention
no way to prevent testicular cancer
regular self exams should begin at 13 through adulthood
testicular cancer has no early warning signs
if detected early and treated before metastasis, cure rate is almost 95%
Scrotal Abnormalities
Hydrocele, cryptorchidism, epididymitis, varicocele
