Memory 4 Flashcards
Serial reaction time task
Participants have to press a button when one of the lights turns on.
It is found that subjects are faster with structured sequences than when they are random. This implies that the participants are learning implicitly.
Science behind choking under pressure
In high stress situations, experts shift to conscious processing rather than unconscious. This conflicts with highly automatized skills.
Novices should focus on accuracy and experts on speed.
Dual task procedural memory experiment
When putting, dual task interferes with novices but not with experts. Experts seem to get better when doing a dual task
Mirror tracking task
Participants have to draw while looking in the mirror.
Alzheimers patients’ procedural learing is largely intact compared to control subjects
Picture fragment identification task
Task where a picture is show that only has some lines and eventually keeps adding lines until it becomes an object.
If you have seen it before you recognize the object very quickly.
Implicit learning under anesthesia
After surgery the next day patients can often say things that were said to them during surgery despite no explicit memory.
Retention in explicit and implicit memory word fragment completion task
After 1 hour retention interval the recognition is better than the fragment completion but after a week fragment completion stays the same and recognition drops
Differences betwen implicit learning and memory
Implicit memory may be intentional or accidental and learnig may have been explicit or implicit.
Implicit learning is unconscious and affects behaviour but no realization of this
