Emotions as reflexes
Specific stimuli trigger emotions so they are quite simple and automatic.
However emotions are flexible, many different stimuli can elicit different emotions

Breaks down facial expressions into components of certain muscle movements.
Action units are used by scientists, animators and computer vision.
Fear vs Disgust sensory exposure
Fear expression increases sensory exposure to detect source of threat
Disgust expression diminishes sensory exposure to avoid contaminants.
Function of emotions these days
Original function is lost but now mainly serves as a social communication device.
3 types of smiles
- Reward smiles: communicate positive experiences
- Affirmative smiles: signal appeasement, social bonds
- Dominance smiles: negotiate status in social hierarchies
