Membrane Fluidity Flashcards
In terms of membrane bilayers. What is a glycocalyx?
A twisted, tangled stretch of carbohydrate groups attached to the lipids and proteins of the cell membrane. Which are used for cell-cell recognition and adhesion.
In-terms of membrane bilayers. What is a leaflet?
The space between the two sides of the bilayer.
After the structures which make up cell membranes have been disrupted through heat or chemical intervention. What happens? And where can this be viewed?
Membrane fragments are desperate to bond with each other, so at a body of water during summer, a greasy sheath covers lakes and reservoirs after hot, sunny spells. Due to the disrupted membranes and revealed membrane fragments of billions of microscopic algal cells, both living and dead.
