Meiosis Flashcards
Why does meiosis happen?
Meiosis is a process whereby eggs and sperm are produced by the division of special diploid germ cells which undergo meiosis to produce a haploid germ cell with a new combination of genes.
What is recombination?
The cross-over or swapping of chromosomes between each-other to generate a new combination of genes.
If an organism has a pair of chromosomes within a diploid cell, that has identical alleles. It is said to be what?
Homozygous
If an organism has a pair of chromosomes within a diploid cell, that has different alleles. It is said to be what?
Heterozygous
What happens at Metaphase 1 which is different to Mitosis Metaphase?
Paternal and maternal chromosomes are joined together at the centre during Meiosis Metaphase 1.
During Mitosis Metaphase they are split up along the centre in single chromosomes.
