Meiosis Flashcards
What are the 5 stages of mitosis
Prophase
Metaphase
Anaphase
Telophase
Cytokinesis
What happens in prophase
Nuclear membrane disappears, tye DNA unwinds and condenses into chromosomes and spindle fibres become visible
What happens in metaphase
The chromosomes line up along the centre of the cell. Spindle fibres attach to chromosomes at the centromere
What happens in anaphase
Chromatids are pulled to the edges of the cell by spindle fibres
What happens in telophase
A nuclear membrane forms around each of the sets of chromosomes to form nuclei
What happens in cytokinesis
The cell surface membrane forms to separate the 2 cells
Define mitosis
The process of cell division. Cells replicate their DNA and then divide to produce 2 identical cells
Define interphase
The cell makes extra sub-cellular parts such as mitochondria and ribosomes
Define meiosis
Cell division that only Takes place in reproductive organs of animals and plants. It results in 4 daughter cells ( gametes )
Define haploid
A cell that contains a single set of chromosomes
Define diploid
The presence of 2 complete sets of chromosomes in an organisms cells with each parent contributing a chromosome to each pair
