Health And Disease Flashcards
What is a genetic disorder
Disease caused by mutated alleles - passed from parent to offspring
Define disease
A problem with a structure of process in the body that is not the result. Of an injury
Define pathogens
Microorganisms that cause disease
Define communicable disease
A disease passed from an infected person to other people
What are diseases caused by pathogens
Communicable disease
What is. Non-communicable disease
Diseases that are not passed from person to persom
How does smoking cause a cardiovascular disease
Substances from tobacco smoke damages the artery lining. Fat builds up in the artery wall at the site of damage making the artery narrower. A blood clot may block the artery here or break off and block an artery causing a heart attack or stroke
How can a narrowed blood vessel be widened
By inserting a stent at the narrowest part to hold it open
What are the 4 main common pathogens that cause disease
- Bacteria
- Viruses
- Fungi
- Protists
What do pathogens need to grow successful
Bacteria, fungi and protists can reproduce wherever that conditions are warm with plenty of moisture, nutrients and space
What is the type of pathogen and transmission found in cholera
Bacteria- spreed in water
What is the type of pathogen and transmission found in tuberculosis
Airborne bacteria - droplet infection
What is the type of pathogen and transmission found in chalara ash dieback
Airborne fungi
What is the type of pathogen and transmission found in malaria
Protists spread by mosquitoes
What is the type of pathogen and transmission found in HIV
Virus spread by direct contact
