Diffusion And Active Transport Flashcards
What is a concentration gradient
Difference in concentration of particles
What dies permeable mean
Substances cab pass through
What doesnt passive mean
Doesn’t require energy
Name a place where diffusion occurs
1.Lungs- gas exchange in the lungs of oxygen and carbon-dioxide
Name 4 factors that affect the rate of diffusion
- Temperature- higher the temperature the faster the movement
- Concentration gradient - greater the difference faster the movement
3.surface area of membrane- larger the surface area faster the movement - Thickness of membrane- thinner the membrane faster the movement
Define turgid
When something is firm
What is active transport
Movement of particles from an area of low concentration to an area of high concentration against a concentration gradient
How is active transport released
Released through respiration of the mitochondria
Why do we need active transport
- To transport mineral ions into a plant root hairs from very dilute solutions in the soil
- Allows sugar molecules to be absorbed from lo concentrations in the gut into the blood from a higher sugar gradient.
Define osmosis
diffusion of water from a dilute solution to a concentrated solution through a partially permeable membrane
