Hormones Flashcards
What does the endocrine system consist of
It consists of a series of glands that all secrete hormones
Define hormones
Small chemical molecules that are passed into blood and then spread throughout the body in the bloodstream
What do tissues have that make them specific to hormones
Receptors
What can hormone molecules act as
They can act as signals that trigger changes inside the cells
What does the pituitary gland do
It produces multiple different hormones which either tell the body what to do or tell other glands to release their own hormones
What hormone does the thyroid gland produce
Thyroxine
Whats the main role of thyroxine
To regulate rate of metabolism
What does the pituitary gland do if it detects low levels of thyroxine
It releases TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone) which stimulates thyroid to produce more thyroxine
What does negative feedback mean
Regulation of hormone levels
During negative feedback, what happens to thyroxine
Thyroxine inhibits TSH being released when levels are too high and TSH stimulates thyroxine being released when levels are too low
What hormone do the adrenal glands produce
Adrenaline
When is adrenaline released and what does it do
It’s released during fight or flight response and it increases heart rate, blood pressure, and blood sugar levels
What conversion does adrenaline cause
Glycogen - glucose
What hormone does the pancreas produce
Insulin
What does insulin do
Helps regulate out blood glucose concentration
