Media- Post-Modernism Flashcards
What is a globalisation?
The process by which societies become increasingly interconnected
What is a metanarrative?
Broad overarching theories which try to explain how society works and the nature of social change
What do postmodernists mean by blurred boundaries?
Due to a wide range of media and increased individualism, it has lead to less clear divisions between social groups and so groups are not constrained by set roles and fixed ideologies
What is meant by ‘truth is relative’?
There is no one answer, truth is dependent on individuals interpretation- truth for one is not for another
What is incessant choice?

What do postmodernists mean by diversity and choice?
Due to wide variety of media images, audience members are more likely to receive the messages in different ways; shift from collectivism to individualism, where there is no fixed ideologies and set beliefs shaping representations- individuals create own meaning from media as they interpret it differently
What do postmodernists say about significance of globalisation?
This process has had an impact on media representations as it has provided access to a broader range of lifestyles and identities from which people can choose- including hybrid identities
What is meant by pick n’ mix identities?
The only thing that we have control over is our identity and we change ourselves based on what our interests and values are- pick and choose what we pursue and like: constant process of reflecting and bettering ourselves
What is meant by the disillusionment with the idea of progress?
We have not found all the answers to everything, though it was promised with the technological progressions
What do postmodernists mean by media saturation?
Society becomes dominated by digital information and people interact with the media on a regular basis through a variety of products, and as such are seen as one of the main institutions that have potential to shape identity, relationships and lives- liberating force as we are no longer restricted to traditional ideas of ethnicity, gender etc
What do postmodernists mean by hyper-reality?
We can no longer determine what is real and fake as media saturation has meant that they are blended together and there is no clear distinction, uncertainty as to what is the truth

the world viewed as a community in which distance and isolation have been dramatically reduced by electronic media (such as television and the Internet)
What does Baudrillard argue about hyper reality?
The media has altered the nature to reality that the audience experiences, contending that people are engulfed by communication and are continually forced into a state of hyper reality
What does Turkle mean by the culture of simulation?
TV is more of a real world than the actual world they inhabit and the internet is the main organ of a virtual world- accustomed to the life we see online and interact with it everyday repeatedly as if it were our own
