A

Congenital abnormality of ileocaecal area (remnant of vitelline duct) leading to secretion of intestinal acid (like gastric mucosa) or alkaline (pancreatic juices), which causes ulceration and rectal bleeding.

Rule of 2

A

Meckel diverticulum:

  • occurs in about 2% of the population
  • is about 2cm in long
  • is found about 2 ft from the ileocecal valve
  • approximately 2% of patients develop a complication over their lifetime
  • the male to female ratio is 2:1.
