Me 2.5 Storing Memories Flashcards
What are the limits to our long-term memory
There isn’t any: it is essentially limitless.
Where is memory at?
The entire brain. It is not stored in a specific location, but rather different parts of it.
Episodic Memory
Memories of personal experiences and events
Example: Your first day of school
Semantic Memory
General knowledge and facts
Example: Knowing the capital of France is Paris
Which section of the brain would thinking about passwords or letter activate?
Left frontal cortex
Which section of the brain would imagining things activate?
Right frontal cortex
What role does the hippocampus play in memory?
It helps process explicit information. It activates when new memories are being formed. Sort of like a save button.
Memory Consolidation
Migrating information from the hippocampus to the cortex for storage. Sleep supports this stage.
Cerebellum in memory
Helps develop certain conditioned reflexes.
Basal Gangila
Involved in motor movement, facilitates the formation of procedural memories for skills. Recieves input from the cortex and communicates with the cerebellum.
Infantile Amnesia
Inability to recall memories from early childhood.
Reason: hippocampus is the last to mature and we do not possess language skills back then.
What do emotions do to memories?
Emotions trigger hormones that influence memory formation.
What does stress do in memory
It allows for strong memories to form
Memory trace
A lasting form of physical change as memory forms.
Flashbulb Memories
Mental snapshots of exciting or shocking moments
