Concept
The building blocks of thoughts. A mental grouping of similar things
Prototypes
The example you think of right away when you think of a concept. Football player –> fast, athletic
Schemas
frameworks of concepts that help us organise and interpret information.
Assimilation
Incorporating new information into existing schemas without changing them.
Example: Seeing a new breed of dog and adding it to your existing schema of what dogs are.
Accommodation
Changing schemas to incorporate new information.
Example: Learning that some birds can’t fly and updating
your bird schema to include flightless birds like penguins.
Creativity
The ability to create novel and valuable ideas
Divergent Thinking
Thinking to expand the number of solutions to a problem (Creativity)
Convergent Thinking
Thinking to eliminate as many other solutions as possible (things like the SAT)
What are creativity’s components?
Expertise: Background knowledge,
Imaginative thinking skills,
A venturesome personality,
Intrinsic motivation,
A creative environment
How does one boost one’s creativity?
Develop your expertise,
Allow for incubation time: inattention allows for automatic processing
Let the mind roam freely,
Experience other cultures and other ways of thinking.
