MDMP-Step 2 Flashcards
What is the most important step of MDMP
Mission analysis
What is the purpose of MA (5)
Gain SU Understand the problem Understand the OE Identify what must be accomplished Identify the purpose of the operation
Step 2 Key Inputs (5)
Commander s initial guidance
Higher s order
Higher s intel/knowledge products
Other s products
Army design products
Step 2 Key Outputs (8)
Problem Statement
Mission statement
Initial CDR s intent
Planning guidance
CCIR and EEFI
Updated IPB/ estimates
assumptions
Evaluation criteria
Step 2-1 Analyze higher HQ s Order (3)
Determine unit contribution
Mission and relationships (adjacent,.., jiim,..AO)
ID difficulties and contradictions
Step 2-2 IPB
Refer to OPORD
Annex B intelligence
Annex C Operations
Step 2-3
Determine specified, implied, and essential tasks
Step 2-4 Review available assets and identify resources shortfalls (3)
Assets= arrangement, detachment, supporting elements that are available to conduct the mission
Link available assets to each specified and implied task
Include a suspense for each specified and implied task
Step 2-5 Determine constraints (2)
Constraints are restrictions imposed by higher
Affects action or inaction and limits freedom of action
Step 2-6 Identify critical facts and develop assumptions (2)
Facts: statement of truth or thought to be true at the time
Assumptions: a guess/theory of the current situation or future course of eventa….necessary….but not yet verified
Valid assumption must answer all of the following (4)
Logical
Realistic
Essential
Avoid assuming away a threat capability
Considerations for assumptions (3)
An unmade assumption may prove more dangerous than an assumption proven wrong
Made for both friendly and threat situations
Each PIR, FFIr, and EEFI must have a corresponding assumption.
Step 2-7 Begin risk management (2)
Initial assessment of operational risk
>risk to mission
>risk to force
3 categories of control (educational, physical, avoidance/elimination)
Step 2-8 Develop initial CCIR and EEFI (2)
Planning
>info needed to select a COA
>focus on building SU
Execution
>info needed to validate selected COA
> or initiate a critical event
Step 2-9 (3)
Develop the initial collection plan
Annex L of the base OPORD
S2/S3 work closely to ensure they fully synchronize and integrate information collection activities into the overall plan.
Step 2-10 Update Plan for use of available time (2)
Time= non renewable resource
The 180A
>monitor time closely
>enforces established times
Time and location of (briefings, collaborative planning, rehearsals)
Step 2-11 Develop initial themes and messages
Purpose: set favorable conditions ISO
Critical events
Transitions
Control information/mis information within AO
Step 2-12 Develop a proposed problem statement (3)
A problem is an issue or obstacle that makes it difficult to achieve a desired goal or OBJ
Purpose: help leaders understand what to change in the existing environment
A problem statement is the description of the primary issues that impede commanders from achieving their desired end states
Step 2-13 Develop a proposed mission statement (3)
A mission statement is a clear statement of the action to be taken and the reason for doing so.
The mission statement must emphasize the single task and purpose of the mission
Elements of a mission statement: 5Ws
Step 2-14 Present the mission analysis brief (2)
Staff to staff brief
Purpose: to build SU and reach a COP among all members of the staff/team prior to starting COA development.
Step 2-15 Develop initial CDR s intent helps subordinates (3)
Exercise judgement and initiative
Understand the larger context of their actions
Provides guidance in the absence of orders
3 elements of commander s intent
Expanded purpose
Key Tasks
End state/conditions
Expanded purpose
Explains how the unit s mission purpose links to/ or supports the higher HQ s mission
Key Tasks (2)
Those activities the force must perform to achieve the desired end state
Acceptable COAs accomplish all key task
End State (2)
Describes the conditions created by a successful mission
In SOF, missions often include political or strategic implications
Step 2-16 Develop and issue initial planning guidance (6)
Provides additional insight on cdr s vision
More down and in than cdr s intent
Broad and general
Specific
Initial focus is on MA and ISR
After MA, focus shifts on COA development, analysis, and comparison
Step 2-17 Develop COA evaluation criteria (4)
Derived from commander’s guidance
Address factors that affect success and failure
Measure COA effectiveness
May be weighted based on their importance to the commander
What are the tools used by the commander to describe his visualization during MDMP?
Commander’s intent
CCIR
Commander’s guidance
Which Staff member is responsible for creating the collection plan?
S2/18F responsible for collection synchronization tools and collection plan
What is CDR’s intent and what purpose does it serve?
A clear, concise statement of what the force must do and the conditions the force must meet to succeed with respect to the threat, terrain, and desired end state.
Provides the basis for subordinates’s initiative.
What is a CCIR and what purpose does it serve (3)?
Information required by the CDR to support visualization and decision making
helps the CDR maintain SU and make decisions
Helps scree the type and amount o information reported directly to the CDR
Evaluation Criteria (3)
Factors used later to measure the effectiveness and efficiency of a COA
developed during MA to eliminate bias prior to COA analysis and comparison
weighted by the COS based on the assessment of its importance (from CDR’s guidance)
