IPB Step 1 Flashcards
IPB-1
Define the battlefield
Importance of IPB? (3)
Understand operations: analyze mission variables
Visualize operations: SU, determine ES, sequence of events
Describe operations: communicate vision
Definition IPB
is the systematic process of analyzing the mission variables of enemy, terrain, weather, and civil considerations in an AOI to determine the effects on operations.
Definition IPB-1
identifies for further analysis the significant characteristics of the operational environment that may influence friendly COAs and command decision.
IPB-1 Outputs? (2)
AO/AI/AOI
Define threat
IPB-1 So what? (+success)
clearly defining for the commanders what the relevant characteristics of their AOI are.
results in saving time and effort by focusing only on those characteristics that will influence friendly COAs and command decision.
Definition area of operations (3)
Defined by the JFC; should be large enough to accomplish the missions and protect forces
may be continuous or non-continuous
part of the AO not assigned are called deep area
Definition area of influence
Geographical area where the commander is directly capable of influencing operations by maneuver or fire supports systems (inside or outside the AO)(S-2/S-3)
Definition of area of interest (5)
AI
areas adjacent thereto and extending into ENY territory
areas occupied by enemy forces who could jeopardize the mission
established by the commander
normally larger than AI
