McMurry (Kap. 15,3) - Biological acids + Henderson Hasselbach Flashcards
1
Q
When is a carboxylic acid completely dissociated and completely undissociated? at which pH?
A
In Acidic solutions (pH lower then pKa) = carboxylic acid undissociated (CO2H)
In basic solutions (pH higher then pKa) = carboxylic acid dissociated (CO2-)
2
Q
What is the pH in humans?
A
Neither too acidic or basic, nearly neutral (7,3).
3
Q
If the pKa value of a given acid and the pH of a medium is known - can you calculate the percentage dissociated and undissociated form by the henderson hasselback equation?
A
YES - see page 537 for example.
4
Q
It is calculated that nearly 100% of the acetic acid is deprotonated in the pH = 7,3. Is the same applicable for the carboxylic acids within the cells?
A
Yes.
